Grace (Jennifer Lawrence) and Jackson (Robert Pattinson) are a young couple who move from New York to the man’s childhood home in the countryside in search of a quieter life. Just as they begin to settle into their new surroundings and welcome the birth of their child, Grace increasingly feels isolated and begins to suffer from severe mental exhaustion. Her deteriorating health pushes their marriage into increasingly unsettling and unpredictable situations. In Lynne Ramsay’s Cannes Competition film, Jennifer Lawrence delivers an electrifying performance that vividly captures the near-madness of postpartum depression.
Cannes Film Festival 2025 - Main Competition
Lynne Ramsay is one of contemporary British cinema’s most distinctive voices. Emerging with Ratcatcher (1999), a tender and unflinching portrait of childhood set in 1970s Glasgow, she established a visual language defined by precision, intimacy, and emotional restraint. Her later works – Morvern Callar, We Need to Talk About Kevin, and You Were Never Really Here – each explore the residues of violence and memory through striking formal control and a deep sensitivity to sound and image. A former photography student, Ramsay brings an acute visual intelligence to her films, where gesture often replaces dialogue and silence speaks as forcefully as words. Her cinema belongs to a lineage of filmmakers who turn interior states into physical landscapes, crafting films that stay with the viewer long after the screen fades to black.
