Film Description

An unfinished film is passed from one friend to another. The dialogue between them is a journey accompanied by drawings of a species of cicada called the Great Eastern Brood X, which only appears in the United States every 17 years. Eastern Anthems is an unusual road movie, a beautiful story about the connection between nature and the human world.

About the Director

Jean-Jacques Martinod is an Ecuadorian filmmaker, media artist, researcher, and curator whose work operates between documentary, experimental cinema, and media art. His films examine human and non-human relationships, mythologies, memory, sensory cognition, and biogeographical landscapes. He often works with analog film techniques (Super-8, Super-16), found/in archival materials. His most important cinematic works include Sandoval’s Bullet (2019), Before the Deluge (2020), and Datura’s Aubade (2021).

Matthew Wolkow is a Canadian filmmaker and visual artist based in Quebec. He holds a master's degree in visual arts (film) from Concordia University and a bachelor's degree in film from UQAM. His work blurs the boundaries between essayistic film, sensual and experimental forms, and documentary.
