Amélie was born in Japan to a Belgian family. For her, the world is an uncertain place until a miraculous encounter with a cube of chocolate awakens her unstoppable curiosity. Each day, the little girl grows closer to her family’s housekeeper, Nishio, discovering the wonders of nature as well as the truths hidden beneath the surface of her family’s idyllic yet foreign life in Japan. Winner of the Audience Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Little Amélie or the Character of Rain looks at existence through the sincere sensitivity of a child and reveals how loss can make life’s beauty even more precious.

Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han are animation directors, both studied at the Gobelins School of Animation in Paris. Maïlys is a director, story artist, animator, and visual designer, creating characters and backgrounds for 2D and stop-motion animated films; from a very young age, she drew and invented stories for the characters and puppets she made with her father’s help. Liane-Cho is a director, story artist, and animation supervisor, who began his career as an animator on films such as GO WEST! A Lucky Luke Adventure and Sylvain Chomet’s The Illusionist, before working as a senior animator on Rémi Bezançon and Jean-Christophe Lie’s Zarafa. Little Amélie… is their first feature-length animated film as both writers and directors.
