Parrhesia: The Art of Resistance & Georgian Creative Movements

The state of film culture and film funding in Georgia bears an eerie resemblance to the system that has emerged in Hungary in recent years. Politics has tightened its grip on culture, bringing censorship, the silencing of critical voices, and economic coercion. In response, the Georgian film community has united in a collective boycott of the new system. The legendary Bassiani club has also played a significant role in organising protests against the regime.
In this discussion, we speak with Georgian filmmakers and a representative of Bassiani about what it means to stand up for artistic freedom in the face of political pressure, and whether it is possible to prevent communities from falling apart.
