BIFF EXHIBITION - RAOUL COUTARD

BIFF kiállítás - Raoul Coutard

A collaboration between BIFF and ECPAD Paris brings Raoul Coutard’s largely unexplored Indochina War photography archive to the public for the very first time in an immersive exhibition format. Comprising nearly 4,000 images taken between 1950 and 1954 across Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, his work offers a crucial account of the final years of French presence in Indochina. After his time in Indochina, Coutard went on to become one of the iconic cinematographers of the French New Wave (Nouvelle Vague), collaborating with Jean-Luc Godard on films such as Breathless, Vivre sa vie and Pierrot le Fou, and with François Truffaut on Jules and Jim and Shoot the Piano Player. Having experienced war in multiple roles- as a soldier, photographer, and cameraman- he created deeply human images that transcend conventional military photography. Building on last year’s festival, where Robby Müller’s photographs were displayed alongside a recreated period hotel room, this exhibition uses space as an integral element. Through carefully textures, and surfaces, the installation evokes the physical and emotional atmosphere of a war zone, allowing visitors to engage with these historical documents on a sensory level.
