Film Description

Twenty-five years after his debut, La Libertad (also part of the festival’s programme), Argentine director Lisandro Alonso returns to and expands upon that remarkable first feature with an unexpected sequel of sorts. Double Freedom once again follows Misael (Misael Saavedra), a taciturn woodcutter living in Argentina’s lowland pampas, whose quiet routine is disrupted when his mentally unstable sister (Catalina Saavedra) is released from a care facility and he must take her in. With its patient observation of labour and everyday life, Alonso’s latest film explores the limits of personal freedom and the uneasy space between fiction and lived experience.

The film’s companion piece, La Libertad, is also part of the festival programme. Screening: 10.31 – 15:30

About the Director

Lisandro Alonso is one of the defining figures of contemporary Argentine cinema. His films observe the landscape, labour and the most elemental forms of human existence through an exceptionally restrained, meditative approach. His first feature, La libertad (2001), followed the daily life of a solitary woodcutter in the Argentine pampas; twenty-five years later, Double Freedom returns to the same world and the same protagonist. Alonso’s films continually move between documentary observation and fiction, while landscape and physical labour become almost autonomous cinematic experiences.
