Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

Jane Schoenbrun, one of the defining contemporary voices of American indie and queer cinema, returns with a blood-soaked, psychosexual slasher comedy starring Emmy Award winner Hannah Einbinder (Hacks) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files). Einbinder plays Kris, a passionate young writer who is given the chance to breathe new life into her favourite horror franchise, Camp Miasma, after years of increasingly dubious sequels and a dwindling fanbase. When Kris seeks out the mysterious, now-reclusive star of the original film, played by Anderson, the two women develop an uncanny connection that begins to expose the dark secrets lurking beneath the franchise. As the lines between Camp Miasma and reality begin to blur, it becomes increasingly difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Jane Schoenbrun is a non-binary filmmaker and writer, and one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary American independent cinema. Their previous films include We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, one of the major discoveries of the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and I Saw the TV Glow (2024), which also had its Hungarian premiere at BIFF. Schoenbrun belongs to a generation for whom the television of the 1990s – from Twin Peaks and The X-Files to Buffy the Vampire Slayer – opened up entirely new worlds, as pop culture began to reshape the visual arts with unprecedented force and reach. Their work has been particularly praised for its precise portrayal of the identity searches of Millennials and Generation Z, its nuanced depictions of queer and trans characters, and its singular ability to create unsettling, immersive atmospheres.
