Film Description

Following the finale of his TV series, filmmaker John Wilson looks to the bedrock of his beloved New York City for inspiration and structure. Concrete, the world's most widely used building material, appears as an ever-present life force, and John sets out to make the definitive documentary on the matter. To tell this seemingly drab story, he decides to use the industry-approved Hallmark formula to increase his movie's appeal. But his foundation soon begins to crumble – literally and figuratively – as he struggles to balance artistic freedom with the realities of the modern film industry.

About the Director

John Wilson is a New York-based documentary filmmaker, comedian and writer, best known as the creator and star of the Emmy-nominated HBO series How To with John Wilson. Born in Queens, Wilson began his filmmaking career editing surveillance footage shot by a private investigator before developing the distinctive observational style that would become his trademark. His work turns the most mundane details of everyday life into unexpected journeys that are at once absurd, hilarious and strangely philosophical. The History of Concrete is his first feature film, expanding the singular approach of How To with John Wilson into a larger-scale story that remains just as personal, unpredictable and wonderfully strange.
