A workshop on how watching films in the classroom can become active, shared engagement.
“Merely playing a film in the classroom to fill a lesson does not constitute film education – that only begins when students actively engage with the content.” The goal of this workshop is to try out ways to engage with a film and with the people you are sharing a room with. Together we’ll watch short films or fragments of longer films and try to find ways (plural!) to interact with each other about what we saw, what we experienced while watching and what we can make of it. This way we will find that engaging with film is not only engaging with content, but also with choices of filmic form, the technological and material conditions of film and social/political implications of making, selecting, watching, and discussing film.
