Film Description

Oscar-winning director Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) returns to the big screens with a star filled dark comedy action thriller featuring his signature high-quality sharp dialogues.

Set before the 1973 Chilean military coup, Wild Horse Nine stars two-time Oscar nominee and Emmy winner John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich, Dangerous Liaisons), whose performance earned him the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival. He plays Chris, an aging CIA agent who sets off on a week-long vacation to Easter Island with his partner Lee, played by Oscar winner Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri). As the two men stroll among the island's iconic statues, they take stock of their questionable pasts and confront their current crises. Their smoke-filled reverie is interrupted only by the machinations of their boss, MJ, played by Steve Buscemi (Fargo, The Big Lebowski), who heads the CIA's Chilean office.

The screening is supported by Raiffeisen.

About the Director

Martin McDonagh, an Oscar-, BAFTA-, and Golden Globe-winning British-Irish director, screenwriter, and playwright, is one of the best-known figures in contemporary British cinema. His works are easily recognizable for their dark humor, sharp dialogue, and often brutal, provocative storytelling. He began his creative career writing for the theater, and acting plays a prominent role in his films as well. Hungarian audiences may also be familiar with McDonagh from the theater, as his plays are frequently staged on Hungarian stages. His first film, the short film Six Shooter (2004), won the Oscar for Best Short Film. From there, there was no stopping him: his next film, In Bruges (2008), was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) received seven Oscar nominations, two of which resulted in wins: Frances McDormand won Best Actress, and Sam Rockwell won Best Supporting Actor. The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) received nine Oscar nominations and won the award for Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival, while Colin Farrell was named Best Actor. At this year's Venice Film Festival, John Malkovich won the latter award for his performance in Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine.
